Joyce Elaine Smith, age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 25th 2021.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio. She lived and worked in Columbus for most of her life, then moved back to Dayton to be close to family. She lived at Bethany Lutheran Village since 2017.

Preceded in death by her parents William Ray and Frances Smith (nee Watson) and her brothers Byron and Raymond. She is survived by her nephew Aaron, great niece Mia and friend Melissa.

Joyce graduated from the University of Dayton and held several degrees from the Ohio State University including a Masters in Genetics.

She was most proud of her long career in Laboratory Medicine at Ohio State University Hospital.

Joyce made a dedicated conversion to Catholicism in her 20’s and was active in the Cursillo Movement.
She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew Parish in Columbus.
She also actively volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul thru her Parish, working weekly at the main distribution center for many years.

She will be remembered for her lifelong respect for education, her love of travel and her cats Peter and Pilar, her fondness for MCL cafeteria, having a dry sense of humor and her enjoyment of OSU women’s basketball.

She was a kind friend to many and will be missed.

Special thanks to the staff of Bethany Lutheran Village for their dedicated care.

Aaron, Mia and Melissa -- I share your sadness about Joyce's passing. Gather strength from your fondest memories during this difficult time and in the future. She loved each of you dearly and was very proud to have you in her life.

Joyce was my TRUE best friend during and after our OSU graduate school days. That fact shall always be remembered and cherished.

I am honored and blessed to have known and worked with Joyce. She was hard working, dependable and her dry sense of humor often made the day fun. My condolences. Kathy Heinz
